Any economy is built by humans and this book is about them I love this as a catchphase and as a good reminder to all of us working on these topics to always think about the human impacts I am involved in policy research in this area for work and it can get so big and messy that it s easy to forget that we re really talking about people at the beginning and end of the day I appreciated the human stories in the book most of all as Kessler spends enough time with the people working in this to give a sense of the pros and cons of on demand laborMy big regret with Gigged was that it doesn t uite get at what I think of as big uestion is the so called gig economy in general better than the alternative world where it didn t exist Kessler astutely points out that the problem was that the gig economy s much ballyhooed flexibility often seemed to apply to the company than to the employee It is clear that these aren t great jobs in many ways but neither is the alternative So if these jobs went away would we be better off I don t know for many of the specific apps but for uber and lyft I strongly suspect that they on average provide benefits to both drivers and riders I m not saying we shouldn t demand better we should and can But if they simply went away that s a significant income opportunity gone I ve heard advocates for low income mobility who I am 100% aligned with on goals say in presentations that these companies have created poor people Baloney When lower income people drive for these companies they are choosing to do so and are making money The counterfactual or alternative world if the opportunity wasn t available certainly wouldn t involve anyone magically becoming wealthyKessler does give a useful summary of some of the real policy options we have to avoid some of the downsides of the gig economy While much attention has been paid to transformative options like universal basic income it seems to me that there is need for direct fixes like making benefits portable and clearly reuired for part time and certain kinds of contractor relationships basically the you work for a company the they would kick in to a benefits account which could be combined with other sources to assemble complete benefits from multiple sourcesI was interested in the other gig economy specifics but my thinking keeps gravitating back to the transportation network companies like Uber and Lyft that are having huge impacts both positive and negative At the end of the day my working opinion actually reinforced by the book on reflection is that we as a whole are better off with these services These are not great jobs but many people are able to use the income to materially improve their financial situation And from a user perspective so many people are voting with their thumbs and dollars which shows just how big of an untapped demand there was for better on demand transportationLastly the book did remind me to be re annoyed at Uber for their years of basically lying about tips If you re like me the first time a friend told you about Uber they said and the tip is included Uber did their best to perpetuate this idea but it s just false It was years and years before they allowed tipping through the app in part to keep the nice illusion for their customers Tip your drivers everyone 2018 Reading Challenge Updatebook number 27 40scorecard see belowW
